Research Fellowship: The Consortium Research Fellows Program (CRFP) has a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship for immediate appointment. The Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship will require a candidate to work at theAir Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) located in Dayton, OH. The post-doctoral fellow must have graduated from the program of study within the past three years.

Location: Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, OH.

Research and Task Description: This Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship will support the Cognitive Neuroscience group of the Air Force Research Laboratory. Cognitive Neuroscience is one of the major core research area (CRA) within the 711th Human Performance Wing (HPW) at AFRL. The mission of this CRA is to enhance Airman performance through the understanding of cognitive, psychological, neurophysiological, and physical performance. The group consists of leading researchers in the fields of Cognitive Neuroscience, Cognitive Psychology, Neuromodulation, Neurobiology, Behavioral Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, along with Software and Algorithm development. The team seeks to develop and validate assessments of cognitive state & readiness and performance predictions in both real-time and post-mission to inform and develop cognitive augmentation strategies and closed-loop neuromodulation technologies. Some of the ongoing research efforts within the group include studies focused on understanding the neural mechanisms associated with the degradation and enhancement of cognitive performance. The group focuses on exploration, validation and development of neural (EEG, fNIRS, etc.), physiological (cardiorespiratory, etc.) and behavioral (eye-tracking, posture, etc.) approaches for cognitive state assessment along with development of neuromodulation and other augmentation paradigms for cognitive enhancement and assessing their safety and efficacy. In addition, the group is working to develop new, non-invasive brain machine interface (BMI) methods and technologies to read/write directly from/to the brain and provide a faster, and more seamless means to control military systems and/or vehicles. The group has established many collaborations with industrial and academic partners and is funded by large research contracts from DARPA, ONR, NASA, LUCI, AFOSR as well as significant internal investments from AFRL.

The selected candidate will design and conduct translational studies related to cognitive neuroscience and human performance improvement. The candidate will work closely with other neuroscientists, engineers, and psychologists in the team and will have access to cutting-edge technologies, labs and resources for conducting research across the basic-translational-applied spectrum. The responsibilities will include designing and conducting research studies including human subject research, BMI-based neurophysiological data collection and analysis, developing new hardware/software and compiling observations for reporting and study use. In addition to scientific duties, the job responsibilities will also include mentoring junior staff, interaction/presentations in scientific forums and to senior leadership within AFRL.

Essential Functions: This Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship will support AFRL with the following tasks:

  • Lead and manage multiple research studies with minimal supervision and within time, budget and technical constraints while maintaining speed and efficiency to gain best results
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and participate in ideation/brainstorming of new research ideas and develop research/funding proposals based on these ideas
  • Present results to internal and external stakeholders and in scientific conferences and other public forums
  • Lead or assist in producing high-quality technical papers and participate in IP generation

Qualified candidates should have the following: Candidates with knowledge and interests in one or more of the following areas are encouraged to apply:

  • PhD in neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, Biomedical/Neural/Electrical engineering or related fields
  • Demonstrated experience in using Brain-Machine Interface (BMI) technologies for analyzing brain function including studying dynamic changes in the brain during cognitive processing, neuroplasticity, learning and predictive assessments
  • Experience in cognitive state monitoring and neuromodulation techniques for human performance optimization, human-machine teaming interaction research is a big plus
  • Solid background in statistical modeling and advanced signal processing
  • Proficiency in MATLAB or equivalent programming language (Python, R, etc)
  • Self-starter with the ability and drive to work in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment while delivering under time pressure
  • Experience in performing human subject research is a plus
  • Strong technical writing skills as evident from peer-reviewed publications and proposal submissions; strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, multi-tasking and ability to remain focused on the task.
  • Experience in applying machine learning, AI, big data analysis to real-world datasets
  • Experience with neurofeedback, sensor fusion (integrating sensors such as eye-tracking, heart rate, skin conductance, EMG etc with brain imaging) is a plus

Potential candidates must have successfully defended their dissertation no more than three years prior to beginning this Fellowship. Consideration will be given also to graduate students who have been formally advanced to candidacy and would like to begin a Fellowship as ABD, and then transition into post-doc following a successful dissertation defense.

Qualified candidates must be U.S. citizens, must complete a security background check, and must obtain and maintain a Federal Government Common Access Card.

The annual salary for this Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship is $78,858. The amount is based on the 2020 Federal Government General Schedule for GS-12, Step 1. Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships offer health care benefits, retirement, sick and safe leave, vacation leave, and life & disability insurance. Some travel will be required as part of this Fellowship.
